Throughout junior high, our son had the unique opportunity to attend Vincent J Maloney and participate in the St. Albert Sports Academy. As a student athlete, he thrived in this learning environment! Geoff Giacobbo, Program Coordinator and all academy teachers, actively created and maintained an environment that was academically and physically challenging – students are encouraged to actively pursue their personal level of excellence!
As parents, it was essential that our son remained focused academically – his educational needs were of paramount importance. We believe the needs of our son were exceeded as a participant in the Sports Academy: social, emotional, academic and physical.
Students attending this academy are exposed to a multitude of activities, on and off ice. Student athletes benefit from the instruction of a sports psychologist, nutritionist, fitness testing, dry land training, boxing, gymnastics, swimming and cooperative games. On-ice skill development consisted of drills, practices, scrimmages and tournament participation.

Our son has been in the St. Albert Sports Academy Hockey Program for 3 years. We sincerely appreciate everything that all of the skilled Sports Academy instructors have done for our son. Since joining the Academy, his confidence and skill as an athlete and hockey player has increased tremendously, along with maintaining an honours standing in his academics. Enrollment in the St. Albert Sports Academy has been a very positive experience for our son. Although already a solid student, his grades have further improved. He enjoys the physical nature of the program and participation in the varieties of sports and activities. We find the program well organized, a constructive environment and a good fit for our son.

Our son is so proud to be part of the Sports Academy at Albert Lacombe! Fantastic instruction both in the classroom and on the ice has continued to help our son flourish both as a student and an athlete. The Academy has continued to stress the importance of hardwork, commitment, teamwork, desire and passion which are fundamental in all walks of life. The opportunity to be on the ice in the morning, as well as taking part in a variety of activities off ice has given our son experiences he won't ever forget. Athletics truly are a dress rehearsal for life. Our oldest son, now in his 4th year of university, just got accepted into medical school in California. He started in the hockey program when it was first launched in Edmonton and stayed with it from grade 4 through grade 9. During that time he developed a passion for hockey but also learned to apply himself to his studies. He learned how to focus his efforts and balance his life between work and play. Now we are so pleased to be able to offer this same opportunity to our youngest son who is in grade 5 and in his 2nd year of the hockey academy at Albert LaCombe. We see his personality and independence developing. He too is learning about discipline and effort. Working hard, playing hard. Thanks to everyone at the hockey academy for continued dedication to this program.
